TweetDeck: The Twitter Client Under Spotlight

Posted by Sravan | January 20, 2009 .

There are literally hundreds of applications that have come up around Twitter. A large number of them are just Twitter clients. TweetDeck is one such, and is not the only AIR Twitter client.

TweetDeck LogoTweetDeck is under spotlight now with the app securing funding of upto $500K from Betaworks. That makes it cool for two reasons: the economy isn’t all that cheerful these days, and Iain Dodsworth is the one man army behind the AIR app. Congratulations to Iain on both counts.

The best feature of TweetDeck is the multiple columns. Twhirl occupies very little real estate and that made it difficult to navigate around tweets for me. But in TweetDeck, not only is it convenient to navigate and scroll across tweets, but you can also have upto ten columns with one each for the tweets, replies, direct messages, favorites, any Twitter profiles that you may be visiting, and search.

The groups feature becomes invaluable as the number of tweeple we follow increases. It allows the user to categorize friends according to our preference so that one can view all tweets sent from a set at once, without missing them in the large flood.

The search feature too works better, IMHO. However, I would like separate search features for searching a tag and a profile separately. I have also seen a bug where underneath a profile I get an “Unfollow” button when I haven’t yet started following someone.

TweetDeck is still in beta, but has been in active development with at least a release every month. You can get the latest version 0.21b from the TweetDeck homepage.
