RTMP Next in Open Screen Project

Posted by Sravan | January 21, 2009 .

Adobe released a press release yesterday saying that the RTMP specification is going to be made public in the first half of 2009 as part of the Open Screen Project.

RTMP (Real Time Messaging Protocol) is the multimedia protocol used for data transmission between Adobe Flash Platform technologies. Read the press release and keep watching the RTMP Spec page on Adobe for updates.

Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch said the following according to the press release:

Our ongoing commitment to openness is accelerating adoption of the Flash Platform by developers and resulting in a new generation of Web applications, content and video experiences that run reliably across operating systems and devices.

There you go. At least we now have more clarity about Adobe’s stand on open source as an organization. When coupled with what Adobe won’t make open, that is. Adobe will not include the unique secure RTMP measures it takes along with the the RTMP spec for the benefit of customers.

The new measure is part of the Open Screen Project which is an initiative “to provide a consistent runtime environment for Web browsing and standalone applications — taking advantage of Adobe Flash Player and, in the future, Adobe AIR.”
