Stay focused Without Entering the WriteRoom

Posted by Sravan | January 27, 2009 .

I suspect that many writers use Macs because of tools like WriteRoom and Scrivener, which are cool writing software exclusively available on the Mac OS X. That is the excuse for acquiring a Mac some day, you might keep telling yourself. Now, the AIR app “focused” blurs that excuse.

focused, much like the WriteRoom, throws down the curtains over all other potential distracters on the computer and presents the writer with a screen-wide black text box. You, a keyboard, and a black screen that is waiting to be filled with your words. That is the good ol’ typewriter for you. A typewriter with configurable font, font size and font color, and without dead trees haunting you.

No menus, no minimize or close buttons, no resize. Open, cut, copy, paste, save and close text files using the usual keyboard shortcuts. The Alt+Tab can take you back to the rest of the PC world missing your gracious presence, but otherwise the AIR app allows you that rarest of the fortunes of staying in oblivion, concentrating on your words more than anything else. In that sense, “focused” is a truly rich app, the most simplistic of the kind.

I agree with James Whittaker about the missing feature to set a background color, though I won’t call it an oversight. This is just the first version of “focused”. Though I feel that this black background gives a greater sense of writing alone in silence, some might prefer other backgrounds. That along with rich text are on my wishlist. I won’t ask for a hyperlink option because that would give me a greater excuse to use Alt+Tab, but rich text is something I need for most pieces that I write.

I recommend this app to every writer and suggest them to give it some time because it can grow on you. Unlike WriteRoom, this is free and cross-platform and an AIR application. :-)

Cesare, the funkyboy, is the person behind focused. You may remember Posty, a unified social software client his previous creation. Thank you twice, funkyboy. I am already a devoted user of “focused”.
