eBay ActionScript – Why Not Adobe does something similar

Posted by Charles | March 13, 2007 .

The eBay Developers Program’s eBay ActionScript SDK Beta was out. This is opensource SDK. It covers all the eBay Web Service calls, more than 100 of them.

If you are eBay seller you might know the free eBay off-line windows program called Turbo Lister. It’s very crabby but better than eBay’s web UI (always amazed how eBay can get away with ugly UI by now.) However, they have this San Dimas project going on and it’s about a newer desktop off-line too, using Adobe Apollo. One VERY COOL thing we learned is, as in their blog:

One of the cool things about the library is that we were able to leverage an existing open source project – Apache Axis, to develop the library. Instead of writing a bunch of hand-written code (which would have taken literaly years of developer time) we modified Axis to auto-generate Actionscript code instead of Java code. What this means is that this library gets us about 80% of the way towards having a complete Web Services toolkit for Flash/Flex.

That’s exactly we need in Flex!

We actually rushed to try out the Apache Axis thing and see if we can do the same thing. It’s hard. We use Apache Axis as our web service engine. It comes with a wsdl2java tool to generate Java framework code based on the WSDL and XML schema files. You don’t have to write anything to deal with SOAP messaging and custom data types, which are defined in XML schema. While we are using Flex to access the our SOA resources, the out of box web service features are just not “enterprise” enough. We have to hand craft a layer of code, which it’ll be so nice can be generated by this very same Axis tool.

I wish eBay can eventually opensource the fully functional Axis tool too. Please, Please, Please!

    Hi moxie,

I was the developer that created the Axis – AS 3 integration for the eBay SDK. Watch my blog for a generic release for this problem. (http://adamflater.blogspot.com)

Some day soon you should be able to use the eBay SDK method to create Axis like call objects for any web service with a WSDL.

Send me a message for more details.

    thanks for the interest
