Silverlight Good at Sports

Posted by Sravan | April 16, 2009 .

In Nov 2008, Adobe Flash gave a major upset to Microsoft Silverlight by striking a two-year deal with MLB.com only a year after MLB’s deal with Microsoft Silverlight, in what ZDNet then called a “pretty big coup”. Today, when MLB users are facing problems due to some NexDef problems, the Silverlight guys and many others have taken the opportunity to drub Flash. There are also people who look from the other side of the story and say that it was only MLB’s fault and that the whole issue has been overblown.

I think Silverlight is doing a smart thing here. Apart from being an active partner in this campaign over the fiasco, the Silverlight Team has highlighted various victories that it has secured and they must have been making sure that news reaches as many as possible.

2008 Beijing Summer Olympics
2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics
CBS March Madness on Demand
AT&T Masters Golf Tournament

Microsoft has always been good at PR and Marketing. It would have been impossible to survive otherwise, being one of the most-hated companies. And the sports industry is one of the largest revenue getters of the world economy. The brand value of multi-billion dollar companies like Nike, Adidas, Puma; the endorsement packages for sports sensations like Michael Jordan and David Beckham; the popularity of websites like nba.com and cricinfo.com; the craze for cricket in India and Super Bowl in the USA are only a few things that highlight this fact.

Being from India, I’m especially watching the competition for Cricket. A couple of billion viewers worldwide. Possible a few hundred million on the Internet.
