Resurrection of AIR App Nomee

Posted by Sravan | August 28, 2009 .

nomee logo Resurrection of AIR App NomeeNomee is an AIR app that attempts to be a one-stop-shop for all social networking. Similar to Skimmer, I initially thought. Back in April when it had entered public beta, I was unimpressed. The concept of Nomee cards was quite confusing and the need to explicitly share cards with friends soured the experience. Three months later, Charles’ experience wasn’t any better either.

However, Nomee’s willingness to recieve feedback and regularly update has been a great plus for the app. Nomee’s latest release came out only this week with several new features, and since its first public beta version it has greatly improved its resource utilization.

Here is what all one can do with it:

  • Login using openID.
  • Follow other people on nomee. “Following” a user includes following them on Twitter, blog, Google reader, Flickr, Youtube and N other social networks that the user may have authorized, as well as seeing their updates that come on Google News and Google Alerts.
  • People whom a user is following can be divided into user groups much like in TweetDeck. (The UI, I think, is designed to look familiar, much like TweetDeck.)
  • Flickr photos and Youtube videos can be viewed from within the app.
  • Update Twitter status. Nomee now allows users to reply or retweet, but that implicitly means one can simply update their Twitter statuses even though an explicit status update option is not yet available.

The “follow” feature needs a major enhancement, which is quite easy: Nomee like the numerous Twitter clients should allow users to view all tweets from the users they follow, not just those who also have nomee accounts. I think this is about to happen thanks to it adapting openID. In addition, “unfollow” is a much-needed feature. Because viewing images and videos from within the app is possible, it should allow the user to resize windows and also read blog posts (or news items) from within the app instead of launching a new tab in the browser.

If it can achieve these, I will be more than willing to make Nomee my one-stop-shop for everything social networking.

Thanks for the 2nd look, we are listening and already working on some of the enhancement ideas you had. You should see them appear in the next 2 or 3 updates. If you ever think of more ideas, suggestions, etc.. Just let us know.
