four things that matter the most for the next web

Posted by Charles | April 24, 2007 .

If you haven’t felt it, now you know the web is changing. Desktop is hot, offline is hot, media is hot, visualization is hot, virturalization is hot, and so on. But fundamentally, behind all the happenings, four things really set the baseline of the future web:

APIs

Digg just released its API. And who else doesn’t have API? The Web is a platform and all the APIs make sure of it. However, the mash-up-is-cool is not just cool anymore. Serious business models are emerging and soon solid online/offline systems built on top of serious APIs will be mainstream. APIs mean healthy ecosystem.

Widgets

A site or a online community is irrelevant now. Web 2.0 proved that people do like to share. However people don’t like to share how they share and how they access shared information. Individualism goes mainstream now, even though shared info/data runs the Web 2.0 train. Widgets fit the bill very well. Through widgets, you can get my data without come to my place, or I can get you data without bothering visit your crib. With widgets, I can construct my online or offline digital world the way I want and like. By embracing widgets, small, medium or big business (aka enterprise) won’t be taken hostage by “enterprise software” licenses. The lines between ERP, CRM, SCM, PLM or else are blurring with all the widgets fill the gaps. Mark my words, widget rules in the next web.

Features of Attention

Regardless, I’m still looking for information online everyday. When I type in a keyword to search, say “swap”, the system should know as a decent guy I’m looking for exchange books, DVD, etc. My weirdo neighbor might ask for something else for sure if you know what I mean. But how the systems know. Through Features of Attention technologies. The technologies employ tool to collection and analyze your usage of Internet, and figure out who you are and what the best to serve you. One of the tool is the Firefox plugin Attention Recorder. Another interesting example shows what people are trying is LikeBetter.com.

RIA

Rich Internet Application technologies is very critical for the next web because the next web is very visual, period. I don’t think AJAX can shoulder this role anymore when online goes offline or browser goes desktop. However people think AJAX is RIA, it’s just not a complete technology. Watch Adobe Flex, watch Adobe Apollo, watch Adobe Flash Lite, watch Microsoft Sileverlight.
