It becomes a tradition that I’ll write a 10-predictions piece for every new year. This is only because I’ve been doing so well with those predictions that I just can’t help trying it again and again. Before getting into 2010 (pronounced twenty ten and that’s settled), let me review how good the 2009 predictions made on January 1, 2009 are.
1. New version of Silverlight will put Flex in defense mode
Yes, Flex is in defense. Silverlight 3 is getting real close to Flex 3. Silverlight 4 is at the runway too. Microsoft can do better if they haven’t spend efforts and resources adding those windows specific integrations into Silverlight 3 and 4. Silverlight is more and more a Microsoft windows product now, you know what I mean. It might be a good thing for Flex actually.
3. Google will release a RIA runtime to beat Flex, Silverlight, Firefox, and everybody else for UI spaces
Yes, it did. If we all agree that HTML5+Javascript is type of RIA, then Google’s Chrome Frame for IE plugin is something we need pay attention to, even though I think it’s merely a transitional product.
4. Flex for mobile will arrive
Yes, well, partially. At Adobe MAX, the Flash 10.1 for mobile gained great deal of attention. It will work for all major smart phone devices, except iPhone.
5. Flash will officially on iPhone and Android
Partially yes. Flash 10.1 will be on Android. But it will be a compiled-to-native approach on iPhone, even though the authoring is on Flash. There are at least 5 games on iPhone are developed using Flash with such approaches.
6. 2009 is the year of the Web Cloud Computing
Yes, yes and yes!
7. Google will buy Adobe
No. Nobody’s buying Adobe.
8. Dojo will be acquired (by Oracle, Sun, IBM or Google) so the rise of big dude backed AJAX RIA.
No. Nobody is buying Dojo. Dojo is becoming a monster.
9. Twitter will announce a way to make money or it’ll be shutdown. Long live blogs.
Neither. Twiter is becoming the backbone of western ideology. Can’t let it die before Iran giving up its nuclear weapons plan, can it?
10. All RIA developers will still have their jobs
Yes, I’m sure you do!
