Does Flex Need Support for Comerical Component Libraries?

Posted by Charles | January 29, 2010 .

Tom Van den Eynde wrote a post about Flex and commercial component libraries. From Tom’s view Adobe lacks a component library update. They have Spark around the corner but that’s a two-year in making.

“As far as I’m concerned Adobe doesn’t have to come up with these components itself. Third party components with a decent licensing scheme (comparable to the 3rd party components available for Silverlight) would be perfect. Apart from ILOG Elixir (that comes with problematic licensing options) there’s hardly anything out there. Even Dough Mcune with his fantastic Flexlib library seems to have given up.”

One reader Ricardo said, “This is really something that Microsoft does well and Adobe does wrong.”

Another one seems disagree, “Well I think that the main advantage of Flex is that is so easy to create or improve components that there is no need for 3rd party components or at least for the basics components.”

How do you think?

Flex really is hurting with line of business 3rd party libraries, the most obvious being grids, we really don’t need another charting vendor. Recently we hired a VERY good Flex contractor to add a few features that were missing in ADG, it took 2 months, I don’t need to say how much $ this cost.

Unfortunately I don’t see things changing, Silverlight for the little time that it’s been on the market has picked up a HUGE amount of 3rd party components that carry over from ASP.NET. I would pay almost anything for Flex equivalent of WebGrid Enterprise like http://www.intersoftpt.com offers.
