Facebook does API right and beats saleforce.com

Posted by Charles | June 12, 2007 .

Saleforce.com seems a old story now, even though it still the representative of SaaS (software as a service). Also we’ve seen everyone is giving out API these days from Digg to going-further ebay. Considering it feels like there is a Facebook application shows up every minute, I think Fackbook really does API right.

“Hosting” is the keyword.

While you give out API and wish build the application ecosystem around the API, it’s hard to manage, control and capitalize from the ecosystem. Facebook starts with API plus hosting. All the applications created are under their control and they can take advantage of them at any creative way later. How do you think why Google starts Mapplets recently after the wild success of its Map API? Keep those Map applications on their servers.

Even though nobody mentions it yet, I think Facebook API/applications posts great challenge to Saleforce.com.

Saleforce started as a online CRM (customer relationship management) services. The CRM basically is to manage customer list and actions associated with it, at data level. A social network with commercial purpose.  What is Facebook? Social network for all your relationships and it’s way cooler. Facebook is a wide open field that can do what all Saleforce can do. With the  millions of users and growing-like-weed applications, can’t think of any better CRM platform than this.

bye, Saleforce.com.
