This is survival of the fitest theory in operation. The buffalo calf was fit enough to survive. The lions were able to trap the calf but did not have a chance to deliver a fatal blow or bite to the neck artery to it or to suffocate it. The vily calf did not give them a chance all the while it was in their grip. The crocodiles lost out because of their inferior strength compared to a lion. Ultimately, the buffaloes who know that strength is in numbers attacked the lions and retrieved their calf. They sensed through the calf’s bleating (not heard on the tape) that it was alive and was calling for help! The luion that was tossed in the air got a severe goring. He may have later succummed.

One of the very best wild life video”s I”ve ever seen. Never seen anything like it before. It”s amazing what some animals will do to rescue their babies, even from pack animals like lions. Absolutely watchable again and again. It must have been even more amazing actually being there and seeing it first hand. Thanks for displaying it and giving people a chance to see animals and nature together in the wild as we”ve never seen before. What is most amazing to me is the reaction of humans when they witness normal animal behavior. The fact that the buffalo fought to save their young, which shows true altruistic behavior, is very common. Humans are always surprised when they witness other species act this way, as if they were the only animals capable of altruism. After years of scientific trials and studies proving that other species like chickens, pigs, cows and other non-Human animals are cognitive, altruistic, and have similar social behavior, humans choose to ignore this and continue to use these animals for food and clothing among other things, when so many alternatives are available to us.
once in a lifetime chance in seeing something like that. let alone catching it on film.. and even that’s an understatement

Really a very rare video. Tough guys always survive .
BigBozer: The theory of the survival of the fittest really has little to do with what animals are most pysically capable of literally “suviving” in the purest sense of the word. Rather, Spencer meant to describe a creature’s ability to survive and reproduce in a given environment. This calf, by all means, was NOT the most ‘fit’ animal shown here - it is too young to run quickly and has yet to grow any natural defenses against lions and crocodiles, which are all a part of this creature’s environment. The fact that the calf was caught at all is a clear picture that it is not yet suited to its environment.
This is not a case of survival of the fittest at all - it is a case of survival of the luckiest. It is dumb luck that the lions hadn’t yet killed the little buffalo, and I can’t imagine the creature living for very long after this, considering the amount of damage done to it by the crocodile and the lions. As far as we know, that calf could have bled out or died from infection.
Buffalos in general, however, are great survivors because they move in numbers. An individual animal is not at all suited to the harsh environment. However, as a species moving in groups, they survive well enough to reproduce. Part of the instinct that keeps these numbers high is the instinct of the group to attack their attackers if one or more cows are taken. The buffalo survived for that time because the lions were greatly outnumbered, and the calf itself was incredibly lucky.
