There is a interesting and laughable article from Wall Street Journal (which will be sold soon) about 10 things your IT department won’t tell you. Here is the summary with quick answers:
- How to send giant files: Use online services such as YouSendIt, SendThisFile or DropSend.
- How to use software that your company won’t let you download: one, finding web based alternatives. Two, use services such as RareIdeas.com (seems a dead site)
- How to visit the web site you company blocks: One, find a proxy your company doesn’t block. Two, use Google translation as http://google.com/translate?lang-pair=en|en&u=www.blockedsite.com
- How to clear your tracks on your work laptop: From IT or Firefox, go to Tool and clear the cached data.
- How to search for your work documents from home: Use Google, Microsoft, Yahoo or Ask’s desktop search engine.
- How to store work files online: Use an online storage service such as Box.net
- How to keep your privacy when using web email: add ’s’ to end of http when use web email.
- How to access your work email remotely when your company won’t spring for a BlackBerry: Use mobile device with data plan.
- How to access your personal email on your BlackBerry: setup up inside BlackBerry to add extra account to access POP mail.
- How to look like your’re working: Hit Alt-Tab key quickly.
I know it’s a laughable list. From this list you would know most of WSJ readers are very much computer illiterate.
