Trying to find somebody? There are couple of startups for people search, alone with all the social networks at you disposal. For example, I was trying to find and research the status of flex developers in certain area in the US. I might want to throw in couple of odd criteria that just popped into my mind to narrow down the search. I found the only place give me that kind of flexibility is the new people search startup http://www.spock.com.
Spock is a people search application. You can search for celebrities you love, politicians you hate, athletes on your favorite sports team, your neighbors and friends, or even people you have fallen out of touch with. For each person they find on the internet Spook provides links to where they are on the web.
My search start with the term “flex developer” and it gave me back the information alone with a static URL represents the search, http://www.spock.com/q/fex-developer. By looking at the URL I know I can actually do the same search by typing the search directly to the browser’s address field. Or, I might be able to use it from a program. And who know, Spook might be able to give XML feed this way later. I just like simplicity.
Spook works the way of searching the internet and collecting people information. That makes me thinking all the talks about web 2.5 or web 3.0, which is to make the information of web be machine consumable and more structural. Information of people certainly is one of the most interesting data item out there.
Make users participle and contribute to the data Spook presents is another helpful feature. Once you registered an account with it, you can go tag people. Or, I think most of people do, you can go enrich (by tagging) your own data. I’m sure you can find yourself over there if you have an account on linkedin or other popular social networks. I found that’s how spook makes the search more flexible.
The search result is quite interesting too. I found the names shown up were not in a obvious order. Could this become the digg for people? We’ll see.

Unbelievable that I should give them my account information of different social networking websites. Am I missing something here???
Actually you don’t. They somehow managed to collect your information from you public profiles in those social networks. I don’t think it’s hard to that though.
