Have you ever wondered how big of an asteroid it would take to destroy your house? How about your neighborhood? Maybe your country? Now you have a chance to find out, and maybe understand what the dinosaurs felt like.
You can use the Flex application at down2earth.eu to create an asteroid, determine its density, speed and entry angle. The application will show you the size and depth of the crater. It will also give you a detailed description of what the effect of the impact would be up to 500km away.
Here is a screenshot of the calculator:
My only problem with this application is that you do not have a choice of maps to place the impact. This application is very educational. Although it is interesting to find out at what distance your clothes will catch on fire and how far away glass will break, I don’t think this application will have much of a following.
It is just not that much fun to destroy something that is unfamiliar. A choice of different countries would go a long way to making this application more appealing. Wouldn’t you want to see what size asteroid it would take to destroy your neighbor’s house and what the effect would be on your own?
