Here is a very interesting webtop startup, teqlo. It’s a good example of combine AJAX and Flash to take advantage the strength of them.
Just like the other AJAX based webtop such as Google’s iGoogle and NetVibes, the web desktop is AJAX based and the widgets are organized in three columns layout, while you can drag-drop or open-close.
However, when it gets to customize or develop your own widget, the whole UI becomes Flash based development environment. From there you’ve got all the visual and flexible positioning and other goodies from Flash based vector UI.
After playing it for awhile, I can feel the approach is clever and it makes sense to me. How do you think?

The “customize or develop” portion of the application that you find interesting was actually written in OpenLaszlo. It is compiled to Flash, but is written in LZX. I work for Laszlo Systems, but this project was developed externally. It’s great to see this kind of work being created with the platform.
This reminds me of a web-based opperating system I saw a while back. I think it was called eyeOS. Can’t see it taking off in the near future though.
for a bit of a different take on the webtop, try this webtop Deskie. A minimalist cloud computing desktop.
