Microsoft releases initial code for IronRuby

At the open source conference Sys-con, Microsoft released an early version of IronRuby that will let programmers write .Net applications with the Ruby language.

Microsoft intends to fully release IronRuby on RubyForge and take a wider range of contributions by the end of August. The software is available under the open-source style Microsoft Permissive License.

Once Microsoft releases the Silverlight version 1.1, expected in the next few months, developers can use Ruby or other scripting languages to build Silverlight Web applications on Windows or the Safari Mac browser.  The is the pushing effort from Microsoft to “light up the Web”, while beat up Adobe and other RIA long time residents.

Eventually, developers could use supported dynamic languages to write applications for handheld devices and, in theory, Linux applications using the Mono Moonlight implementation of Silverlight on Linux.

There surely will have some impact on both the popular Ruby on Rails community and the broader RIA space.

Anticipating the competition, Adobe has already put Flex into open source camp, which certainly helps the proliferation of the Flash based RIA development. However, the Microsoft is just this strong at the application development platform area, they don’t need to be the first and the greatest. What the always do is to catch up the leads,  push them back (or trying) and at least get a big share of the pie. same thing to IE, X360, Zune …
