Good Old Java Back to RIA World

Posted by Charles | October 22, 2007 .

I was surprised by the progress Java made at RIA end. I am certainly surprised by the react of my surprise. This makes me look deeper into the state of Java, not only at the new comer JavaFX, but also good old Java language itself.

My conclusion, we might do have formed certain stereotype regarding Java for UI. I think Java is quite capable now day and it’s a strong player at RIA space.

I think part of Sun’s strategy of releasing JavaFX is to change the perception. It might work because the foundation of Java is ready. One prove is the open source image programing language Processing.

Processing is an open source programming language and environment for people who want to program images, animation, and interactions. It is used by students, artists, designers, researchers, and hobbyists for learning, prototyping, and production. It is created to teach fundamentals of computer programming within a visual context and to serve as a software sketchbook and professional production tool. Processing is developed by artists and designers as an alternative to proprietary software tools in the same domain.

Even though seemingly Processing tries to make it vague, the underneath engine is actually Java.

You won’t be too exciting about the image processing or animation because we’ve seen it a lot. But you would be amazed seeing those demos and thinking about it’s Java working hard to make it happen. Go see those demos and have a feel of them.

I know our faster computers play some role to make Jave a media tool today. However, Java language and its VM themselves are definitely leaps ahead of its past now.

Logically, I think JavaFX does have a chance.

Thanks for the kind words about JavaFX. We are working very hard on improving both the underlying platform (install experience, plugin, etc.) as well as the tools that let developers and designers make great applications. If you have any questions or need more information feel free to email me at joshua.marinacci@sun.com. I’m on the JavaFX Tools team.
