Is Adobe Flash Lite 3 too Late?

Posted by Charles | December 3, 2007 .

It’s no doubt that Google’s Android gives much needed catalyst to the mobile space. I’s not surprised also to see players in mobile, hardware or software, are accelerating development, releasing and marketing efforts. Adobe is evidently very busy in its Flash Lite this year and now released the new Flash Lite 3 developer edition.

It hasn’t  been a lot talks about RIA on mobile, but it’s about time, while 3G is proliferating outside of US and players in the US are starting kicking off of it and talking about 4G.

There are three wars going on at mobile devices, the browser war, the OS war and RIA tool war. The browser end is a old war goes mobile with the latest announcement from Firefox’s mobile ambition. At OS, Google is trying to rule it by Android, bypassing the hyped gPhone (seems nearsighted hype now). The RIA tool? Adobe Flash Lite wants to have a play.

There are only three major choices to develop a RIA application on mobile, OS native, J2ME or Flash applications. In US, J2ME is becoming the de facto OS independent way of developing mobile applications ranging from games to gmail or Yahoo Go. Flash is popular in Asian such as much envied Japan DoCoMo phones and services. It seems logical that if Flash (Flex and AIR) can become popular on desktop environment, it should be prevailed on mobile. But it’s actually lagged behind Java, which was kicked butt by Flash at desktop browser in the past 10 years. Kinda interesting and irony. While Java has been enforced this year by JavaFX mobile,  how much room for Adobe Flash Lite to grow there? Since the gap between desktop Flash and Flash Lite is still wide (i.g. ActionScript support,) is Flash Lite late in the game?

Anyway, the newly release Flash Lite 3 developer edition is on Adobe Lab now. It’s only certified by Adobe on the Nokia N95 (non-US 3G version,) but technically it should work on any Nokia S60 3rd edition or later devices. The Flash Lite forum shows that people has successfully installed and played it on varies of phones. Give it a try.
