Two Major Web 2.0 Services are Down

Posted by Charles | January 15, 2008 .

At this moment both my frequently used web 2.0 services, Stumbleupon and Twitter, are down. Twitter is kinda up and down the whole morning.

It makes me thinking about how the web-as-a-platform trend will be evolving into, when we are more and more relying on those services to go about our daily life. Can we live without them all when they are all got cut off from our computers one day. Not sure.

why should people find this surprising?

one of the pillars of SOAP was SLA’s and alternative vendors.

the more people rely on technology, the more there’s scope to let you down. rely on one vendor and you’re screwed…

besides, what do people expect for nothing? you get what you pay for…

… and this includes Open-source software. You pay for longevity with it by being closely involved and helping out, whether directly contributing and doing some driving of it – or feeling sorry for the “newer noobs” on the forums and helping them out…

I’m not knocking that model, but I am saying that there’s no such thing as a free lunch…

I think over time more and more people will realize that fact about the “free lunch”. That also means on the web, besides advertise-and-free type of business model, other paid services are still having bright future and feasible.
