Test Web Design in 40 + Web Browsers

Posted by Charles | February 20, 2008 .

If you really want to reach every one of web users then you have to take care of more 40 web browsers. It seems to me a good reason to rethink about HTML + JavaScript web development. But if you do need make sure your design is insanely fit, the place called Browsershots could be your best friend.

Browsershots makes screenshots of your web design in different browsers. It is a free open-source online service created by Johann C. Rocholl. When you submit your web address, it will be added to the job queue. A number of distributed computers will open your website in their browser. Then they will make screenshots and upload them to the central server. After the quest is processed from the queue, you can view the result from the screen shot page, where you can find out exactly how your page looks like in those 40+ browsers. I bet you don’t have all those browsers handy, even though you might have Linux, Windows and Mac.

This is a open source project that you can download the source code to figure how they did it. Also, it provides XML-RPC interface that you can submit screen shots of web pages to its service queue.
