Better Than Never, Adobe Mobile Gallery
Adobe just released its Flash Mobile Gallery the week. Coming to think of it, the Flash Lite has been around for so many years and only now Adobe pulled up a mobile gallery. Either they were really stretched out too thin or just don’t think mobile is a big deal. But that’s not what Microsoft thinks (with Silverlight) or Sun bets on (poor JavaFX). Guess Adobe turned around and realized have to do something there. Regardless, late is always better than never.
When going through the Flash Mobile Gallery, which is of cause a nice Flash application itself, you must have a bit of eye opening feeling about how rich contents Flash Lite already has on mobile platform. If you are Flash or Flex developer, you might experience the urge to develop something there. Well, not so fast. Flash Lite is not real Flash. The language it uses is way behind Flash 9. For Flex developers, you have to wait much longer. Adobe said they started working on Flex for Mobile but I’m not sure if that’s a vision or a plan.
Here are things Adobe should really work on:
- Make Flash Lite ActionScript 3 environment. Call it Flash Mobile, forget about the “lite”.
- Work hard, I mean harder, to put Flash Mobile on Microsoft Mobile, Symbian, iPhone, Android and so on.
- Create hardware profiles like J2ME so that we have standard SDKs to access phone hardware functions such as build-in GPS, SMS, camera, etc.
- Open source the SDK and advocate the phone manufactures to open up the Flash Mobile Profile implementation.
- Accelerate Flex Mobile SDK/Builder development. Or AIR Mobile (make more sense actually)
If have not enough resource and funding, get acquired.
