Flash Lite + Java ME = Cool Mobile Platform

Posted by Charles | May 3, 2008 .

In an exiting development Sony Ericsson has been able gel two of most popular development platforms in mobile computing through its new technology called ‘Project Capuchin’. It intends to combine the best of two worlds, Adobe Flash Lite and the Java ME development platform thus opening up a sea of possibilities for developers.

The Java ME development platform is the technology of choice for most mobile application developers because of its security and stronger back-end capabilities. Java has APIs that allow it to access mobile phone functionalities like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, etc. Adobe Flash Lite on the other hand offers richer user interface capabilities, which has made it very popular amongst Internet web sites. However, mobile phones running Flash use it merely for display and cannot usually use it to access applications. Now comes ‘Project Capuchin’ which will allow developers to use both these technologies – mobile phone applications can be developed in Java ME and Flash can be used to offer a smoother, elegant user interface for those applications. For example, developers can design a game using Java ME’s 3D graphics capability and use Flash for the menu.

This technology is expected to benefit both developers – by allowing them to create more attractive applications – as also mobile phone users – by bringing the ease of use from the Internet to the phone.

Sony Ericsson will demonstrate how Project Capuchin works using a few applications, during the upcoming JavaOne expo in San Francisco.
