Up Close and Personal with Mount Rushmore

Posted by Jay | June 4, 2008 .

Mount Rushmore is almost certainly the best known landmark in all of America, it’s unique features mean that it’s instantly recognizable. Everybody around the world must know about Mount Rushmore.

Mt. Rushmore is located in a fairly remote area which is off the beaten track, this means that many people are missing out on the opportunity to visit. Fortunately technology comes to the aid of these people by providing us with a way to quickly and easily look at the carved faces without even having to leave our homes!

That’s right, by using Microsoft Virtual Earth’s birds eye view mode it’s very easy to find the landmark and take a look without having to physically visit the area. Birds eye views are generated by flying planes over the country and then taking photos, this is obviously very expensive which is why not all of the country is covered. Microsoft recently decided to include Mount Rushmore in its birds eye image library so that people can see just what it looks like.

It’s amazing how quickly we take technology for granted, first we were all amazed by being able to plan our journeys by looking at maps on the computer. Then Google released Google earth, which not only let you view maps, but also let you look at satellite images of the area in question! Birds Eye view is the latest addition to this technology and it’s proving to be very exciting!

Mount Rushmore is a fascinating landmark, which is why it’s such good news that so many people will be able to see it thanks to this new technology!
