Adobe or Microsoft?

Posted by Sravan | July 9, 2008 .

RIA technologies over the past few years have been getting increasingly competitive, thereby introducing more and more features much to our delight.

Yesterday, it was announced that the increasingly popular online game Line Rider would be migrating from Flash to Silverlight. A very encouraging announcement for Silverlight. This could influence other game developers in the world.

And last week BBC dumped Microsoft for Adobe a little more. Instead of using desktop apps created by Microsoft-backed Skinkers, BBC decided to switch to in-house production using Adobe’s Flex and AIR. The previous applications “only work on Windows, are built out of a variety of proprietary tools, are difficult to manage and expensive to maintain,” were the reasons cited by BBC. Sometime last year, they had also abandoned Windows media players, WMV (and RM) in favour of Flash players, embedded video. A big win for Adobe.

The reason why Microsoft appeared monstrous after it became a giant is the absence of competition. Ever since it had to venture outside operating systems, especially in search and RIA industries, I am hopeful that it might have realized the prominence of platform independence and open source, two things that Microsoft has always ignored but can’t continue to. Interestingly, these are the two big advantages that Adobe has over Microsoft.

The recent trend check shows that Silverlight is next in line, but has a long way to go to catch up with Flash. Perhaps Moonlight will help Silverlight gain platform independence.
