Advanced Data Visualization for Adobe Flex & AIR

Posted by Sravan | July 15, 2008 .

Flex and AIR on their own are great for visual appeal. Elixir is a formidable package built on top of Adobe platform of Flex and AIR for creating sophisticated, interactive user displays. New in ILOG’s large arsenal of graphics tools, Elixir can help make your rich apps richer with its collection of innovative and interactive data display components that include ready-to-use 3D charts, gauges and dials, map displays, gantt charts, organization charts, treemap charts and radar charts.

Elixir integrates seamlessly with the Adobe Flex Builder. Watch this movie on the ILOG website and you will agree. However, the package is very bulky (79MB for Windows) and the apps created take proportional amount of time to load. Understandably, as do the demos suggest, Elixir will come handy for creating extensive applications where a lot of data needs to be processed, and may have little use for the cute little apps that we use everyday.

ILOG maintains a regularly updated blog that covers various features, examples and HOW-TOs of Elixir extensively. They have recently started their version 2.0 preview program.

The trial version (1.0) is free for download, is fully functional and comes without a time limit clause. However, the paid version also gives access to the sourcecode and is free of the ILOG watermark (seen on each component made with the trial version).

    Hi Sravan,

thx for the post. ILOG installers can be large (we embed a JVM for instance plus loads of documentation) but created applications are most of time in the 1/10th to 1/3 MB size range.

That sounds wonderful, Erwan. Especially the “loads of documentation” part. :-) Thank you for the clarification.
