Twhirl: THE Social Software Client

Posted by Sravan | July 25, 2008 .

Twhirl LogoThe Adobe AIR application Twhirl has proved its self-worth as the preferred software client for social streaming.

Social streaming is catching up. Who could have imagined that answering a simple question like “What are you doing?” would become such a wonderful alternative to the traditional social networking (which in itself is not exactly traditional)? This has especially clicked with bloggers, acting as a microblogging and marketing tool that is brief and non-intrusive.

Until recently, Twhirl could be used to connect to multiple Twitter, FriendFeed and seesmic accounts. This week, with version 0.8.4, it started supporting the open networking service, Identi.ca, proving Twhirl’s adaptability and extensibility. Even if a later social streaming app overshadows all the existing ones, we can count on Twhirl to add to its supported service base.

Apart from bringing auto-notifications from these various apps, twurl, TwitPic, Twitter Search and TweetScan are Twhirl’s other features that make keeping it on our desktop worthwhile. Download the later version of Twhirl here.

Trivia: Twhirl was the first AIR app developed by Marco Kaiser, as a side project. Video chat startup Seesmic, Inc. acquired Twhirl in April 2008.

But I’ve always wondered and never attempted to check this out: Why can’t Twhirl run on UNIX-based OSs?
