Go Green with Black RIA

Posted by Charles | August 4, 2008 .

How can we develop green software with RIA technology? If green means using less energy then the main approach is to reduce the “richness” of a RIA. Here is an example and justification.

blackle Go Green with Black RIA

Blackle is a skin of Google search. They believe the blacken screen will same energy. I’m sure they’d like to blacken Google logo if allowed. According to blackle:

Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. “Image displayed is primarily a function of the user’s color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen.” Roberson et al, 2002

In January 2007 a blog post titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine. Since then there has been skepticism about the significance of the energy savings that can be achieved and the cost in terms of readability of black web pages.

Um…if we don’t like the idea of reducing richness of our Flex application, seems at least we can use a black theme. A easy way to make the world greener and us proud:-)

Well… that maybe true and i would like to belive in that. I really love the black and that is a great example, but also a geart deal. Blackle is using google custom search and the people behind that are winning k’s dolares monthly…

They show all world how to do a great markting, using that “power-save” policy.

But if it’s true! maybe is time to paint ria’s! :)

p.s. blackle.com has nothing to do with google.
