I have never been a big gamer. But I remember sweating for hours at length creating my own stages in Tank and Lode Runner, and being thrilled while playing those as a kid. User-generated content in games could be the next big thing, and PlayCrafter, the gamers' next big thing.
PlayCrafter is a suite of games built using Flex 3. From its large collection of components, one can choose and customize "pieces", easily create a rich "casual" 2D flash game, and share it on the web. By easy, I mean drag-and-drop easy.
Users can also upload their own graphics for all of a game’s pieces, including the background of the game.
The games created can be shared on social networks and blogs, or embedded on any website. The gaming community is excited about this "very intuitive and simple" suite, and love the element of internal physics.
PlayCrafter recently announced that it is entering an open alpha stage of development. As a promotional offer, people can sign up for free and get a chance to win a Playstation 3, Xbox 360, or Wii and $100 in game downloads. The first time you visit the site, it might take several minutes for it to load, so remain patient.
A startup ZipZapPlay is behind the PlayCrafter site. For now revenue is generated through ads run while games load, but some games might later have a feature to pay and play. "All revenue from a game will be shared with its creators," its CEO Curt Bererton told GameIndustry.biz.

Another Flex 3 based game creator is http://mygamebuilder.com.
The community there has focussed a lot on making 2 RPG-style games, but some really interesting graphic and gameplay ideas.
Another flex-3 based build-a-game-in the browser site is http://mygamebuilder.com - but it’s more focussed on original artwork from game makers and RPG-like games
Yes, David. Charles gave a review sometime last year. http://www.flex888.com/249/create-your-own-flex-game-mygamebuilder.html. I visited the site today. It looks good, and seems to load faster than PlayCrafter.
