Subliminal Advertising vs RIA (Video)

Posted by Charles | September 8, 2008 .

Why doing RIA? There are many answers to this questions. I think the mother of all answers is to make users do what the RIA application wants the users to do.

That’s the reason why my mind started spinning after watching this video. “Subliminal Advertising”, is that what RIA really does? The fonts, texts, color, ease of interactive, smooth app work flows, etc. are they all subliminal elements? Why some RIAs works and some others don’t? Is there a answer from this video?

You tell me.

I think there is a certain nuance in a well designed application that makes the user “feel good or feel productive”, a blending of form and function, that when it works well it works very well. I know this might sound strange but an application should empower the user in accomplishing their task, the application should not get in the way. I would guess that the reason RIA’s work or that they don’t is the same reason other applications fail or succeed, and that is good design. When I say design I mean “Human Interaction Design” If the software works the way the people and processes think and work; if the software is flexible and can adapt then it is more likely to be successful. If the people have to change their processes (the software got in the way) to fit the software then you run some risk for failure. I think there are some great features in Flex that can be used when building an application using transitions and animations to guide the users attention to important tasks that user needs to focus on. It is a great time to work in this area.

@Marc. Agree with your points, especially “I would guess that the reason RIA’s work or that they don’t is the same reason other applications fail or succeed, and that is good design.”

When we are talking about UI design, with or without RIA technologies is irrelevant. RIA technology is nor a cure, rather, it’s a convenience.

You know there is a website that sells subliminal music and says that it is based on scientific research (some double blind study). Apparently you can use the subliminal music programs to lose weight, quit smoking etc etc. Has anyone ever used subliminal music before? And if so, what were the results?
