Digest Adobe CS4 Announcement

Posted by Charles | September 25, 2008 .

Adobe announced the release of Creative Suite 4 (CS4) and claims CS4 that “radical workflow breakthroughs, new levels of Flash expressiveness and integration anchor Adobe’s biggest software release.” Man! that’s quite a statement. Let me try to digest some of it:

Delivering radical workflow breakthroughs that bring down the walls between designers and developers

The wall between designers and developers is a very complicate structure. Bring down the wall might still leave a trench between them. How much a “radical workflow” can achieve? I take this means a tighter integration among the tools for designers and developers.

With new levels of integration and expressiveness for Flash technology across the entire product line

This is a very good news for RIA designers and developers. As I said many many times here, the strength or advantage of Flex over others is from the designers, the Flash designers. Leveling the ground for Flash to all the CS tools could help defeating the copycat guru such as Microsoft to bite off Flash/Flex’s share in RIA space. There are lots more Java or .NET developers out there. But as long as the designers stay with Flash, RIA belongs to Flex. Good job, Adobe!

Designers and developers are shaping the way that people consume information, share ideas, sell products, tell stories and create memorable experiences

In other world, RIA = works of designers + developers = better information distribution. Glad Adobe firmly recognizes this. There are lot efforts on developers side of product lately. Now the designers should feel more comfortable.

Designers using the Adobe Creative Suite 4 product family will be able to gain unprecedented creative control using the new expressive features and visual performance improvements in Adobe Flash Player 10 to deliver breakthrough Web experiences across multiple browsers and operating systems.

Flash Player 10 is a big deal in this release. Hurry up, Flex 4!

Adobe Creative Suite 4 significantly expands access to services* available to creative professionals and developers who want to collaborate online.

Obviously Adobe is still marching toward the full online SaaS model. Starting slow is good. All the online tools such as ConnectNow, Kuler and Photoshop Online will be part of the collaboration scheme. How about Bussword?

CS4 will be out in October 2088 and price tag is between $1699 – $2499, ouch!
