Mosoto – Finally a Flex 2.0 startup

Posted by Charles | February 14, 2007 .

The significant part of this startup, Mosoto, is Flex 2.0. It’s the first Flex 2.0 written startup so far (as far as I can find.) We should cheer for that!

It’s built on top of Facebook API by several students. Don’t tell me you don’t have a Facebook account or myspace account. When you login, you actually login from Facebook’s API login page and it’ll redirect back to Mosoto.

It’s in alpha and I can’t get it work so far. As a Flex application, the app initiation is significantly slow than those Flash authored applications. After finishing login through Facebook, it seems take forever to “Transferring data from login.mosoto.com…” I’ve been trying but am not able to get anything back yet. Have to use the screen shot from their Facebook site.

In addition to the technical problem, as a business, it’s questionable. You know I’m a big fun of yourminis.com and I’ve been promoting them, well most of time. My question is that, if we have yourminis, why need mosoto? Once Yourminis has the API released in couple weeks (yes, they do work on it!) build a meshup ‘minis’ widget for Facebook or whatever could be a swift task. Not mention the speedy, mature, reliable server yourminis has put in place already.

I do expect a “bang” from a Flex 2.0 startup. Looks have to wait a bit longer.

There have been a ton of startups using Flex 2. Just take a look at Ted Patric’s Flexapps gallery – http://www.flickr.com/photos/flexapps/

Picnik, Eyejot, Gizmocall, SoundLoud are some just off the top of my head.

Also, the NY Times mentioned Virtual Ubiquity recently.

Thanks for checking out our demo! Just wanted to share some more information about Mosoto. Currently we are in a closed alpha, which is probably the reason why you could not get into the system to check it out. On the issue of the business, Mosoto (which started out as a simple chat application) has already undergone and will continue to undergo many transformations as we look for ways to innovate our product and make it more and more useful to our users. That being said, if you have any questions or would like more detailed information, please feel free to contact me.
