Bookmash Mashes Search Results

Posted by Sravan | November 16, 2008 .

Reviews of Bookmash floating around the web encouraged me to try it. Having done that, I’m not excited. Bookmash is an Adobe AIR app that provides a single window to news, music, images, videos, bookmarking and networking.

When you search for a keyword, results are returned based on the media type and further options you’ve selected. News from Digg under various categories; music genre-wise; videos from Dailymotion, Metacafe and Youtube; finding people based on location and interests; sharing across 36 social bookmarking or networking sites. The results are all displayed on a virtual wall which you can scroll around and pick one to zoom in. I’m sure Bookmash has been designed in a manner easy enough to add more content sources as and when APIs become available. On top of it, Bookmash boasts of localization in 13 languages, which is nearly all the languages that one can with Adobe AIR.

More than content sources and localizations, what they need to concentrate on is search results, memory management and resizing.

When I search for, say, “Al Pacino speech” a single result is returned. When I search for the same on Youtube alone I find 182 results. Now that is a LOT of misses and users are trained to accept spam rather than miss content they want.

The app is about 1.3MB owing to its features. What is surprising is that it constantly consumes over 50MB of memory, even when the system is not connected to the Internet. I think several of the AIR apps that I’ve reviewed in the recent past have a memory management problem.

Bookmash has a serene look and the virtual wall is always a pleasant feature. But an option to resize, at least maximize would be precious. The RIA now occupies only about half the real estate.

If still interested in trying it out, you can install it from the Bookmash home page.
