Rounding Up Last Week: Outside RIA

GigaOm reports that the alleged killer’s rampant shootings at SiPort had not been triggered by layoffs as some news reports claimed, but by individual termination.

Online ad growth is braking with a screech. From a growth rate of 12.7% in 4Q07 to 2.8% in 1Q08 to 1.1% in 2Q08 to 0.61% in 3Q08. My naive theory is that the rate to dip further and then increase slightly once the economy starts recovering. Then, it will reach a steady growth rate like many national economies do. Optimism and order rule it.

Aral is encountering issues with the Macbook Pro on OS X 10.5.5. Scrolling with trackpad in Safari skews pages as compared to using the usual arrow keys. There are other related issues and a software update is apparently on its way, but if you have an alternative in the mean time, Aral would like to thank you.

Bill is happy with the decline in office printing, implying the surge in digital reading. While he doesn’t mention the further implication of increase in the usage of Adobe Reader, I wonder whether that’s because it is not yet apparent. I see people in the corporate world using Word documents for official documentation all the time, even after reaching a read-only state. I prefer text files with “vi -R”. What about you?

ReportLinker.com has a book named Enterprise Web 2.0:Building the Next-generation Workplace. The digital copy costs a whopping $2,494! That is 2.5 times more than a new Encyclopedia Brittanica hardcover set. Must be a bad time for its release because book readers are pinching pennies in these times. Which do you think will happen first: a book sale or its “Septembre” and “Table of Content” corrected? My money is on the former.
