Follow a Train on Google Maps With IndiaRailInfo

Posted by Sravan | November 19, 2008 .

IndiaRailInfo is one of the best Geoweb apps I’ve seen thus far. No, it doesn’t show Google Maps in a new dazzling light. It is simply that it has a great utility value and as of now gives the information sought very quickly.

Wikipedia says that Indian Railways is the 5th largest network in world in terms of track length, transports eighteen million passengers and more than two million tonnes of freight daily, and is the world’s largest commercial or utility employer, with more than 12 million employees. Imagine the number of people it serves and the volume of commerce it enables!

IndiaRailInfo is a simple (not easy) Google Maps mashup that gives users the geographic location of any train in India. All one needs to enter is the train name or number. Needless to say, this is not just an extrapolation of where the train is expected to be, but the actual position taking delays into account. This is especially useful because Indian Railways are notorious for train delays.

While it acknowledges its fallibility, the app is fast and seems to point the locations fairly accurately.

IndiaRailInfo has a whole website built around it, and I wonder whether that could be one reason why it is not yet popular. Users of the website may get their information without ever using the app. The website is ad-free, non-commercial and is not affiliated with the official Indian Railways website.

I hope the United States and the European Union railway networks are following closely.

Hey man, I came upon your blog by accident. Wow, what a great easter egg you have located. Congratulations. I would say USA (where I live and work), can learn a thing or two from this rail site. People here usually think of India as a technology outsourcer, with Indians working mostly on American projects and Call centres. But with sites like this, I can proudly show off a great example of an indigenous Indian product that rivals if not betters any American site. Please continue to locate more sites like this. cheers.

Glad you liked the website, Rakesh. Everybody can learn something from interesting things like this, though this hasn’t anything to do with one country, USA or some other, per se.

People’s conceptions about India are not entirely wrong, though they are far from the complete picture. This is true for every country in this world.

Before I get carried away, thank you once again for dropping by and letting us know that you liked the app. We’ll definitely do our best to discover good apps; keep watching this space and you’ll see. Do let us know if you come across one yourself. :)
