Adobe AIR 1.5 on Air

Posted by Sravan | November 20, 2008 .

Adobe released AIR 1.5 a couple of days ago during the MAX conference. This is in line with people’s expectations as being one of the interesting revelations. But I almost missed it until Adobe pushed an update notification to my laptop recently.

Dan Orlando must be relieved. :) Almost a month ago, he accidentally let out some insider knowledge while bound by an NDA, and immediately removed it off the post. I captured the secrets, nevertheless, and being the law-abiding person I’m, kept it to myself, deprving you of any advance excitement. Now that the official release is over, I hope nobody minds if I post his text here:

In simple terms, AIR 1.5 integrates the new features that have been built into Flash Player 10 so RIA developers can take advantage of them. These features include: custom filters and effects, enhancements to the drawing API, a complete overhaul of the sound API which includes the Speex codec and dynamic sound generation (WAY COOL!), inclusion of the Flex FileReference APIs into AIR, the new Flash 3D effects engine, a new text engine and text layout components, access to system fonts (no more having to embed fonts!), color management, an anti-aliasing engine, dynamic streaming, and keyboard access (albeit very limited) when in fullscreen mode. It also includes what Adobe calls “Real Time Media Flow Protocol”, or RTMFP, which I admittedly know very little about so far.

This all comes true now, though I’m not sure about the last sentence. Along with the WebKit updated with Squirrelfish for faster JavaScript execution and interactive debugging for AJAX-based AIR apps, and a way to encrypt local database on popular demand. Adobe AIR 1.5 isn’t considered a major release, but these updates are fabulous.
