A Few Updates of Tour de Flex

Posted by Sravan | December 17, 2008 .

A Million Samples
Gregory Wilson, one of the Adobe Evangelists behind Tour de Flex, wrote yesterday on his blog that the app has so far been used to view 1,000,000 samples. James Ward announced the release of the app on the 17th of November, exactly a month ago. Now, that is what we call stellar!

Tour de Flex LogoWhen a user of Tour de Flex is connected to the Internet, the app pings http://tourdeflex.adobe.com/ping.html every two seconds. It also creates a log entry on their server every time a sample is viewed to track the popularity of samples. This also implies that there won’t be log entries when we use it offline, which I do quite a bit. A few samples won’t work when you are not connected to the Internet, but many others like the rich text editor do.

Submit Your Samples
Greg also wrote that Tour de Flex currently contains 217 samples and that they would like the number to touch 1,000 by mid-2009. I will be surprised if that doesn’t happen. It must be clear to all Flex developers about how much exposure the samples on Tour de Flex are getting. Be sure to gift us the opportunity to browse your samples in the new year. The procedure as specified on the Tour de Flex home page is simple:

1. Create demos of your work that look good within the Tour de Flex size constraints (663×246 when not expanded)
2. Arrange to have all assets hosted
3. Convert the source code to a color HTML document. You can use Flex Builder’s “View Source” feature to generate the HTML files.
4. Complete the sample submission form.

New Eclipse Plugin
We can now search the samples on Tour de Flex by component name, tag or author through a search interface provided by an Eclipse plugin. The results can be directly opened in Tour de Flex. Add http://tourdeflex.adobe.com/eclipse to your Eclipse software update sites to install the plugin.

A Reader’s Doubt
One of our readers, Vikrant, had the following doubt:

How do i upgrade my tour de flex. I already installed it on my laptop but since the newer code are getting integrated into it. I don’t want to reinstall however i like to merge it with the older one. Could you please help me out for this.

Looks easy but I don’t have a ready answer. I am guessing that the sample updates will automatically (silently?) be pushed using the “objects.xml” file present in $TourDeFlex/data folder as a log. Please do us a favor and let us know if you have a better answer.

Wishlist
The one wish many of us have expressed is that Tour de Flex should also contain the apps on the Flex.org Showcase in the future. Add your wishes below and we will make sure the feedback gets heard.

Thanks for the article on Tour de Flex! You are correct, we will push out new objects.xml files when new samples are rolled out so you don’t have to download a new app. However, we do plan on a full app update in mid-January but we hope the installer size will be much smaller due to us now using RSLs (assuming testing goes ok). We’re fixing a few bugs, improving the appearance a bit, localizing some of the ASDoc links and a few surprises :)

    Thanks!

…one other thing. We are going to turn down the every 2 second ping. It will be more like 15 seconds (or maybe more)

That’s great, Greg. I would love a new version, with a smaller installer size. :) And thank you for the confirmation about the automatic sample updates.
