Flex component repositories are growing

Posted by Charles | March 7, 2007 .

Doug McCune, Ted Patrick, Mike Chambers and Darron Schall finally put their words to work and kicked off FlexLib, hosted on Google Code. If you like Flex then you should know these guys. And when they take action together, you might want to take a seriously look at what they are doing and what they did.

FlexLib is a opensource component library to allow Flexers share and contribute. There are some cool stuffs in there already. Check them out by yourself.

I wouldn’t say this is the first attempt or intension to share Flex goodies. There are Flex Coders, CFlex, Adobe Flex Exchange, and Flex Components group, etc. One way or another they are the places to grow Flex. What’s lack of right now is unification, something like Perl CPAN, Ruby Gem or PHP PECL.

Flex people are creative, like Mrianl Wadhwa, who created FlexBox, a Flex based Flex components library. It’s very nice UI and could be good showcase for Flex itself. It’ll be nice all the nice works can be put together to come up with a standard for Flex component:

  • packaging (package, document, name space, etc.)
  • publishing and notification
  • searching
  • retrieval
  • versioning

I think we are getting there.
