Whirled and Ribbit RIA Challenges

Posted by Sravan | December 18, 2008 .

While you get ahead with your vacation plans, start thinking about a Flash game or a killer RIA app. There are about $150,000 worth prizes waiting to be earned through two challenges.

Ribbit Killer App Challenge
Ribbit, the self-proclaimed Silicon Valley’s first phone company, teamed up with TopCoder for the Killer App Challenge. One can develop an app using AIR/Flash/Flex and the Ribbit platform and enter the challenge through any of five categories: Media; Advertising and Entertainment; Social Networking and Communication; Business and Productivity; Carrier, Network, or ISP Integration; and Wildcard. The winner gets $15,000 and will become eligible for a $30,000 grand prize.

So far 240 teams have registered, and 4 have already submitted their apps. The final deadline is on the 12th of Mar, 2009. Final, as there are three intermediate “checkpoints” at the end of each of which a winner and four runners will be selected. There are a lot more details, and you will have to go through the complete rules because there are quite a few. e.g. US and non-US residents are eligible, but residents of the Quebec province of Canada, Iran, Cuba, North Korea, Sudan or Syria are not eligible.

Daniel Dura, Lee Brimelow and Matt Chotin are the three judges of the contest. I wonder whether they may be helpful if you have any further doubts but be sure to visit the forums first.

Whirled Flash Game Developer Challenge
Whirled, the Flash game development platform, holds a game challenge every three months. I just found that out. The current contest started on the 1st of Nov, 2008 and the deadline is on the 31st of Jan, 2009. Sorry I didn’t know about this earlier, but hey! there is still half the time left.

There are two categories and five prizes in each: Multi-player  and Single player games. A game should use the Whirled API to store scores and to award trophies for both categories. There are a few other conditions, like complying with the full contest rules and the Whirled Terms of Service. They are not as daunting as they sound and easier to understand than most legalese you may have come across.

The upside of participating, apart from the sheer thrill, is that you are eligible for the items sales revenue share and game developer bonus programs irrespective of whether or not you win a prize. The icing is that Whirled only takes a non-exclusive license, so you get to retain all intellectual property and distribution rights to the game. Check out the contest landing page for full details.

Now get going.
