ACE Solitaire: A Beginners’ Flash Game Example

Posted by Sravan | January 6, 2009 .

Adobe Evangelist Ted Patrick is another of those who were busy during the vacation. He finished a Flash game called ACE Solitaire that he had been working on for about 3 months. The game was launched on Facebook on Jan 1st of 2009.

ACE Solitaire is a Classic Solitaire game with one difference: All the drawn cards remain visible in each round of drawing. They are reset only when the player should replace the drawn cards and start the next round. This makes the game easier for two different reasons which you will have to guess.

That said, even the easy games aren’t very easy. Easy and Medium are the “Draw Three” kind and Hard is the “Draw One” kind with only one round for drawing cards. ACE Solitaire on Facebook also has the option of sharing a deck (called the Daily Shuffle) with friends to compete with each other.

The look is pleasant with no sounds and few graphics. I think this serves as a good example for beginners working on Flash Games.

Less than 6 days and ACE Solitaire has over 30 Facebook fans and has been played a few hundred times already. Why not? While it is very simple, there are still people who get fired for getting caught playing Solitaire. (Read this interesting long Slate article analyzing why we get so addicted.)

Ted used ActionScript 3 along with some code by Darron Schall to create the game. Because we are so used to Solitaire, it is enjoyable and not great at the same time. One beauty about this particular version is that the SWF is only 20KB including the card graphics made in Flash CS4, compared to the XP version of Windows Solitaire which is around 100KB. Ted wrote more details about the game design and testing. The best outcome of all this is that Ted had decided to code more often for fun, and write about it.

The latest build allows you to post a game to your Wall/Feed so your friends can play the identical hand you just won.

It was a blast to get back to AS3 and work low level.

    Ted :)
