Flash is now Searchable

Posted by Ross | July 1, 2008 | 1 Comment

Fantastic news for all users of Flash technology! Today Adobe announced that they are teaming up with major search engines such as Google and Yahoo to make Flash search-able. Adobe is providing Yahoo and Google with optimized Adobe® Flash® Player technology to enhance their ability to search the SWF file format and uncover information that is currently overlooked.

This is a major boon to RIA developers as they will no longer have to modify their websites to appear in search engine results. Currently search engines are able to index links and static text in the SWF format but they will […] Continue Reading…

Posted by Charles | July 1, 2008 | 11 Comments

It’s almost half way into 2008. I think it’s about time to have a reality check on what’s going on in RIA space. Specifically, what’s up with Adobe Flex, Microsoft Silverlight and Sun JavaFX, the so called RIA trio. I believe what people want and look for show the best way to measure the trend. Is Flash Why iYomu Died?

Posted by Sravan | July 1, 2008 | 2 Comments

Starting its name with a small ‘i’, having a flash-based personality test with another small ‘i’, and even a million dollar challenge couldn’t help iYomu take off.

iYomu, which stands for “I, You, Me and Us”, was a flash-heavy social networking site. It started a little less than a year ago branding itself as a “social networking website for grown-ups”. When it began, it seemed unique in many ways. It targeted the 25-55 age group, disallowed those below 18 from entering, and hoped to serve the mature audience as a platform for staying in touch with family and friends around […] Continue Reading…

Snackr: A Flex RSS Ticker

Posted by Sravan | June 30, 2008 | Comment

Snackr is a simple RSS ticker built using Adobe AIR 1.0 and Adobe Flex 3. It pulls random posts from RSS feeds and scrolls them across the desktop. As it tries to store and update its FeedDatabase whenever it is opened, it can be run even offline.

The constant scrolling on the desktop can be annoying, no matter on which side of the screen it happens. However, I found it useful to run during the daily hours I spend exclusively for browsing or reading news. There are new RSS feeds that I subscribe to every once in a while, and […] Continue Reading…

Can’t Apple and Adobe Just Get Along?

Posted by Ross | June 27, 2008 | 2 Comments

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that it looks like all of those rumors of of Flash for the iPhone are wrong:
Adobe Systems Inc. felt the sting of the iPhone in March when Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs dismissed a cellphone version of Adobe’s flash media player as not fit for the iPhone.
Ever since, an iPhone-based Adobe flash player has been in the works. While “pleased with the internal progress,” Adobe Chief Executive Shantanu Narayen said recently that the programming only works on a computer-simulated version of the iPhone, not the phone itself.
Even if Adobe manages to finish the […] Continue Reading…

Building interactivity into Flex charts

Posted by Harry Vikatos | June 26, 2008 | 1 Comment

Charts are mostly thought as a way to present information. In some cases though charts can provide a good means for the user to enter or rather alter data, while still graphically viewing the result of his interaction.

We’ll showcase this using a bubblechart in combination with a simple function producing data correlation as follows:

Radius = abs(x-y)

Only one data point is displayed for (x,y) values of (2, 50). However the bubble id draggable. By dragging the bubble, you set new values for x and y, and the radius is accordingly adjusted, as seen on the demo application below:
