Optimize the Indirect Silverlight Installation

Posted by Charles | April 19, 2008 | Comment

One of the most important things to consider when you use Silverlight in your web sites or your applications is to ensure that Silverlight gets installed appropriately on your end user’s computer. This will ensure that your end user has a good experience and can make the most of your applications. So, here is something you could bear in mind when you provide the Silverlight indirect install option to your end users. When you use the Silverlight.js library to load a Silverlight control in a page, the control attempts to detect whether your end user’s machine has Silverlight […] Continue Reading…

The Best Flex Startup Architecture Ever Seen

Posted by Charles | April 18, 2008 | 2 Comments

Moxie talked to the CTO of Lesson Nine GmbH, which created Babbel, the Flex based startup that helps learning new languages in the RIA way. The interview revealed the architecture of this Flex startup. I would say, so far, this is the best RIA startup architecture I’ve ever seen. According to Thomas Holl, the CTO: We’ve been working with 4 developers on Babbel – 2 of them focusing on the Flex client and 2 developing the Ruby On Rails based backend running on Amazon EC2 instances. We were starting from scratch in May 2007, so development time to […] Continue Reading…

Want to encode a video file using MS Expression Media Encoder?

Posted by Charles | April 17, 2008 | Comment

Cell phones have made video making extremely easy, more and more people have begun capturing their “happy” moments through their cell phone camera. However, the process does not end there… What good is a video if you cannot share it with other people… Now, there is good news for everyone who is internet savvy and wants to put up their videos for their friends and family to see. Windows live now allows one to host up to 4 GB through MS Silverlight Streaming for free. But, before you get all excited about it, you first need to encode […] Continue Reading…

How to Build a Silverlight Application using Blend

Posted by Charles | April 16, 2008 | 2 Comments

Well… another day and another challenge… though this time, it was not I who faced the challenge but a younger colleague of mine (the change felt good; it’s usually me who goes around asking for help with all this new technology!). He wanted to create a Silverlight application in MS Expression Blend. So, we set about looking up some resources to do the same. Silverlight being considerably new, not a lot of people at my work place are familiar with it. Further, at the time Mike wanted to create the application, there weren’t enough Help resources available on Silverlight. […] Continue Reading…

Call an ActionScript Function from JavaScript Embedded in an AIR App

Posted by Jay | April 15, 2008 | 3 Comments

Whoever said that becoming the master of one was more important than being the jack of many definitely did not belong to the world of computer programming. Well, this thought occurred to me when for a particular program, I was required to call one of the ActionScript functions from some JavaScript. The main problem was that this JavaScript was embedded in some HTML code that worked as the control in a Adobe AIR application. I tried the time-tested runtime.myASFunction(). And, as you must have already guessed, I failed miserably. If only it were that simple. I went through some […] Continue Reading…

Can I have a variable number of arguments in AS3?

Posted by Jay | April 14, 2008 | 10 Comments

Having programmed in Java extensively before, I am used to the various features of Java that I take them for granted. Even today, when I first think of the logic for a program, it is based on what can be done in Java and what can’t. So, when I had to use ActionScript for a client, I felt a little disoriented (But naturally!) And that’s when I started trying to figure out how to use the features of Java that I am so accustomed to, for instance, the varargs functionality, in AS3. Whether such features existed in AS3 or […] Continue Reading…

Flex Programming Tips of the Week 0804b

Posted by Charles | April 13, 2008 | Comment

Let me just dive into them right away:

Clockwise or Anti-clockwise? – a very interesting experiment with live Flex demo. The app shows the code to capture your mouse movement. Could be useful for game development.

Illudium Flex Remoting Templates – CRUD code generation for Flex. Nice. Even feel nicer if you are a RoR guy. Smart lazy people make our life easier. This is a good example.

Skewing an Image control in Flex – Straight code shows how to skew an image control in a Flex application.

Flex GeoWeb with Yahoo AS3 Services – A excellent mashup of Yahoo AS3 map […] Continue Reading…

Flex GeoWeb Demo with Y!Map for AS3, ESRI and JavaScript

Posted by Moxie Zhang | April 11, 2008 | 3 Comments

On April 11, 2008, Inside RIA featured my article, demonstrating how to program in Flex for GeoWeb applications. The article, entitled “Flex GeoWeb with Yahoo AS3,” contains some good coding explanations. You can access the demo application that hosted at Flex888, right click on Flex to view the Flex and JavaScript source code.
As those with expertise in architecture, enterprise systems and solution development know, Web 3.0 is all about turning information into data, processing the data into knowledge, and then applying knowledge in ways that benefit people’s lives. What many may not know is that 80 percent of […] Continue Reading…

Integrates Flex with Sharepoint

Posted by Charles | April 10, 2008 | 2 Comments

Microsoft pushes Sharepoint as its enterprise collaboration solution very hard all over the places. I’d say the solution is well accepted among large enterprise organizations. As collaboration system and platform, many horizontal solutions can be developed to enrich the environment. RIA can play a great role here for better usability and visualization. As matter of fact, Microsoft published the Silverlight Blueprint for Sharepoint right after Silverlight was under the light, as part of Microsoft Software+Service Blueprints set. How about Flex? Markuso has a good start on a pont about read Sharepoint data from Flex. What he did was created […] Continue Reading…
