Posted by Charles | March 28, 2008 | 1 Comment

Last year Adobe CEO Bruce Chizen announced that over the next 10 year, they are moving all their product online. Looks they are very serious about it. Yesterday, Adobe rolled out Photoshop Express, a online edition of the popular photo edition tool. I’m sure you guessed right, it’s full Flash implementation. And of cause the online Photoshop only offers a small set of features found in the desktop version. But realistic, regular guy like us who needs that many feature anyway. For that matter, this is helava great move from Adobe. It’s all good to customer, no doubt. How […] Continue Reading…

Google Map as the best GeoWeb visualization client and the AJAX RIA pioneer is constantly gotten infusion of UI goodies from Goolge Map API people. This week they put the MapIconMakerFactory 1.0 to Google Code.

The MapIconFactory is actually a JavaScript library that can be used in conjunction with regular GMap API. What you need to do is very simple as the following code shows:

<script src=”mapiconfactory.js” type=”text/javascript”></script>

var map = new GMap2(document.getElementById(“map”));
map.setCenter(new GLatLng(37.441944, -122.141944), 13);
var newIcon = MapIconFactory.createMarkerIcon({width: 64, height: 64, primaryColor: “#00ff00″});
var marker = new GMarker(map.getCenter(), {icon: newIcon});
map.addOverlay(marker);

A Flex Based Web Apps Development Platform

Posted by Charles | March 26, 2008 | Comment

“A 100% web-based system that allows knowledge workers to create their own custom business applications. There’s never any software to install or servers to maintain. Just think it, build it and share it!” And it’s all in Flex too. Can it that easy? I tried and it’s quite good. This startup (started a while ago) is called Coghead. It’s one of few startups that trying to allow develop and host codeless web applications, sort of SaaS platform. Coghead utilize both Adobe Flex and Amazon Web Service as building blocks, for UI and backend. Put its business model aside, it’s […] Continue Reading…

Flex Startup to Reduce Noise in You Life

Posted by Charles | March 25, 2008 | 4 Comments

“More knowledge. Less noise.” That what the new startup filtrbox claims. And flitrbox believe you’d like to pay them to reduce the noise. For now, it’s in private beta test. I’ve got a invite to try it out. One thing I believe is that they are trying to solve a real problem. That is we’ve stuffed way too much information daily. Besides emails, IM messages, SMS, there are hundreds of RSS feeds to consume (or trying to). filtrbox tries to alleviate that pain with its Flex based web system. Here are what it does: Automatically searches online news […] Continue Reading…

Very Serious Rich Google RIA

Posted by Charles | March 24, 2008 | 3 Comments

Do you know what Google Map was written in? Google claimed that the whole Google Map client side was written in Java, yes, Java, by using the Google Web Toolkit (GWT). GWT is “open source Java software development framework that makes writing AJAX applications like Google Maps and Gmail easy for developers who don’t speak browser quirks as a second language.” But I think because it’s too controversy and unconventional, GWT hasn’t really gotten too good traction. Until now. The startup GWT-Ext is to make GWT a serious RIA player. I’m very excited when first bump into GWT-Ext. The […] Continue Reading…

Flash is Coming to iPhone

Posted by Charles | March 21, 2008 | 1 Comment

There are some good news about Flash in the mobile space. First Microsoft will add Flash to Microsoft Mobile platform, even though I’m sure they’d like Silverlight to be the first class citizen there. And, after Steve Jobs said no to Flash Lite. Adobe CEO Shanatanu Narayen has announced that Adobe has begun developing a Flash-solution for the iPhone, using Apple’s official iPhone SDK. “We believe Flash is synonymous with the Internet experience, and we are committed to bringing Flash to the iPhone,” he said. “We have evaluated (the software developer tools) and we think we can […] Continue Reading…

Silverlight 2.0 + Flickr + Virtual Earth

Posted by Moxie Zhang | March 20, 2008 | 1 Comment

I wrote a post on InsideRIA on the mashup of Flickr and Virtual Earth using Silverlight 2.0. What this Silverlight application does is simple. It allows you search Flickr by entering a tag. The result (GeoRSS feed) will be displayed in a thumbnail image slider. You can click a thumbnail image, then the location will be displayed on a map (Microsoft Virtual Earth) as push pin and a larger image can be shown in the infobox when mouse-over the push pin. There are several controls on the application to control the map, such as toggle map control panel and […] Continue Reading…

A New Flex Web Map API is Coming

Posted by Charles | March 20, 2008 | Comment

At ESRI’s Developer Summit, Mansour Raad revealed the new Flex API for ArcGIS server. ESRI had a Flex API for the ArcWeb Service, which is in ActionScript 2 for Flex 2. We posted the mashup series awhile ago, which used that Flex API. Now the new Flex is totally revised in ActionScript 3, which I’m sure many assets developed for ArcWeb Services are reused too. Yesterday Moxie’s post regarding the GeoWeb made a point why these new APIs from ESRI are significant to GeoWeb. Besides GeoWeb, the coming new Flex API will add nice dosage of “Geo” into the […] Continue Reading…
